Distance: 8.6 miles RT. (A shorter hike - Avalon to East Summit and back 6 miles RT).
Elevation gain: About 1600 ft.
Outbound: Catalina Express Long Beach to Avalon. Leaves Long Beach at 8:45 AM. Due to the recent terrorists attack they have asked us to arrive one hour early to leave ample time for check in. Be sure to bring a picture ID. All carry-ons and baggage will be subject to inspection. Baggage needs an ID tag. The boat arrives in Avalon about 9:45 AM.
Homebound: Boat leaves Avalon at 5:15 PM. It will arrive in Long Beach about 6:15 PM.
The Hike: Upon arrival, Hike Leader must get a permit from the Catalina Island Conservancy. After this, we will leave the boat dock and proceed northwest on Crescent St. At Marilla St. we will go left and get onto Chimes Tower Road. In approximately 1 mile we will reach a gate. After two more miles, we will be at East Summit. Here we will enjoy some great cookies. At this point those wishing a shorter hike can retrace their steps and meet the rest of us later at the wooden Indian place.
The hike proceeds with a left turn going 2.7 miles on the Divide Road Trail, then a left onto the Wrigley Memorial Road for 1.2 miles. Another 1.7 miles thru Wrigley Memorial Botanical & Garden brings us back to Avalon.
Post-hike Celebration: We will gather at the same cantina (the wooden Indian place) that we have gone to the past several years. Expect to leave about 4:15 PM to make the Catalina Express.
