Summary: This hike explores the Ray Miller Trail in Point Mugu State Park. Ocean views and mountain vistas abound.
Mileage: 6.8 RT
Elevation Gain: 1000 ft
Directions to trailhead: Drive north on Pacific Coast Highway One about 21 miles past Malibu Canyon (15 miles past Kanan Dume). Turn right at the sign for La Jolla Canyon in Point Mugu State Park. Bear left at the fork in the road and continue to the parking lot. Parking is $7 if you don’t have a state park pass. There are two porta potties nearby.
The Hike: Follow the Ray Miller Trail as it climbs 2.7 miles to the Overlook Fire Road. Turn right and continue down the fire road 0.7 miles to an intersection with the Fireline Trail. Here you will find a picnic table for lunch. Return the same way you came.
Optional Hike: WARNING! This option involves a steep uphill ridgeline scramble suitable only for Ron Forbess and his “lemmings.” Continue down the Overlook Fire Road 1.1 miles to a spot where the road makes a sharp left. Look for a small TRAIL sign in the brush off the road to the right. Follow this trail a few yards to a clearing then turn right and follow the faint use trail steeply up the ridge to an intersection with the Ray Miller Trail. Turn left to return to the parking lot.
Refreshments will be served on the tables in the parking lot.
